Can you learn how to cross country ski without mountaineering?

I have always loved to watch people cross country ski across beautiful mountains, but truth of the matter I hate rock climbing. I know how to do it, used to with my father in New Mexico, I just dislike to.

It sounds to me like you are confusing traditional Nordic Touring (What most people think of as XC) with Telemark or Alpine Touring skiing. While they all use a free-heel style to ascend, AT skiers use a binding that can be fixed at the heel to descend. Telemarkers descend with a free-heel, but use heavy boots more similar to traditional downhill boots than to regular XC boots. Both Telemarkers and AT skiers use wide skis similar to alpine skis. Most XC Touring skis are much thinner.

Rock Climbing and Skiing are two totally different sports and use completely different equipment. The term “Mountaineering” is pretty broad, and backcountry skiing can (at times) utilize the same skills (survival, weather, avalanche, etc.) and some of the same clothing and basic gear, but that’s it…at least in New Mexico. (Especially in the Sangres.) There’s not much in NE NM that would require high angle ascent gear or skills. I’ve climbed lots of mountains in NM in the summer and never needed any technical climbing gear at all. I can’t see where anyone would need much more than some basic crampons (as opposed to those used for vertical ice climbing), some safety rope, an ice axe, and a harness for a safe ascent.

My buddies in Taos ski the backcountry all the time and nothing they’ve told me or anything I’ve seen in their pictures would also make me believe that technical rock climbing skills are necessary.

So, find some buddies, get the right gear, get some training (hire a guide if necessary) and go hit the snow! Have Fun.
