When you abseil from a cliff, building/tower, what is the safety rope attached to, to prevent a fatal fall?
Is it always the harness your fitted in, that supports and bears your weight?
(like rescue workers use/do)
Usually the rope is attached to a connection point on the harness. This is often done through a carabiner where the rope is tied to the carabiner and then the carabiner is connected to a connection point on the harness. Other times the rope is tied directly to the harness.
There are many other ways people use rope to abseil. Sometimes there is no harness at all and the individual rapes the rope around his body in such a way that the friction between the rope and his body slows the decent. Sometimes the rope itself is tied onto the body such that the rope itself becomes the harness.
The other end of the rope needs to be tied to something very secure. Sometimes this is a bolted anchor into rock, sometimes it is a tree, sometimes it is an anchor point on a building, etc. Sometimes it is even just attached to another person at the bottom of the cliff.
Every member of the system has to bear the weight. The rope, harness, carabiner, and anchor all bear weight. In some set ups some components may have to bear much more load than just the individual’s weight.
